Well it may have been Friday the 13th, but it turned out to be a great night for our first House Concert at NOSH + COFFEE. We had a great audience and there was a unanimous verdict that it was a most entertaining evening. Noel and Mary have been playing together since 1984 and they displayed and sang with all the closeness one would expect from such a lengthy career . Their repertoire on the night was varied and included some new songs and many if their standard favourites. The first guest of the evening was their daughter, Ellie, and she sang a solo during the first part of the show. Part two was opened by Con Fada O' Drisceoil who had the audience in stitches with a rendition of one of his latest songs, Amharan na bFia, which tells of the habits of certain Deer in Sweden. During the remainder of the night, Noel and Mary were joined on stage by Matt Cranitch on fiddle, and they entertained the attendance with a stunning second set. They performed a few encores, and finished the evening with Johnny Cash?s Folsom Prison Blues. All in all, it was a great night and Noel and Mary will be making a return visit in the not too distant future.
The Four Star Trio - Friday, April 24th at 8.30 pm
The Four Star Trio. Pat Ahern, Johnny McCarthy and Con O' Drisceoil have been playing together for almost thirty years and have made many recordings and toured both together and with other artists. Con made a guest appearance at the first concert a NOSH and his talent for writing songs will be noted when he will be presented with Composer of the Year at the TG4 Gradam Awards which will be televised in Easter Sunday evening. The award is for his book and CD The Spoons Murder and Other Mysteries which also includes the playing of Johnny and Pat. As well as Con's songs, they play traditional tunes, many with their own arrangements and feature Guitar, Flute and Accordeon as well as other instruments. This concert will begin at the later time of 8.30 pm. We will have a change in musical style for our second concert, featuring The Colin McLean Latin Trio who will entertain with some cracking Latin and Salsa instrumental music. Colin is from Ballincollig and has trained as a classical guitarist both in Cork and abroad. Colin is Finbarr Wright's concert guitarist and the Latin trio has been in existence for around two years. The other members of the group are, Michael Cummins on guitar and Dave Whitla, a Canadian, on Double Bass. You can get a flavour of their music at www.colinmcleanlatintrio.com.
